What happens to materials once they reach our site?

Glass arrives at EEI from townships, contracted recyclers, and by our pick-up recycling service. The glass product is run through a crusher machine and if needed a hammermill to crush or break it up into small pieces for shipment. Recycling glass is called cullet. Our cullet is shipped to another facility for further processing. Once there, the cullet is mixed with glass and processed into furnace-ready material. Material may be used in the manufacture of new glass containers or fiber glass insulation. Most materials are used in the Midwest, with some fiberglass product going as far away as Alberta, Canada or Texas.

We can also break down glass into sand, which can be used in sandblasting, cement filler, and as a grit sand product. This grit sand product may be used on sidewalks and roadways for traction control.

Paper or “fiber” comes to EEI in a variety of forms. We sort all paper into several categories including cardboard, newspaper, colored paper, and high-grade office paper. Cardboard is then baled into large bales for shipment. Newspaper, colored paper, and cardboard are shipped to a processing facility. Once there, recycled material is turned into pulp and then is manufactured into recycled corrugated cardboard and box board. High-grade office paper is also shipped to a processing facility. Once there, it is turned into pulp and then sold to other manufacturers where it is used in various fiber materials.

Tin and Aluminum are separated. The tin runs through a machine where it is crushed, and the aluminum is crushed by hand. The crushed material is placed into large containers and shipped to a processing facility. Eventually the material makes its way to aluminum smelters, steelmills, and other manufacturers.
